Northwestern Medicine Bronzeville Outpatient Center

Expanding healthcare access in the Bronzeville community and responding to the evolving expectations of care.

NM Bronzeville low 04

Supporting Northwestern Medicine’s goal to expand healthcare access, the Bronzeville Outpatient Center brings comprehensive ambulatory care services directly to the community it serves. Designed to function as a trusted neighborhood resource, the clinic offers a wide range of services — including primary care, oncology and infusion services, cardiology, and women’s health — with the capacity to serve more than 50,000 patients.

Continua Interiors partnered with Northwestern Medicine and Lamar Johnson Collaborative to develop furniture solutions and functional layouts that support patients, caregivers, and staff, creating welcoming and accessible spaces that reflect the needs and character of the Bronzeville community.

A multitude of spaces, including multi-functional areas for community events and educational opportunities, waiting areas and exam rooms, and private offices all work in tandem to support the healthcare offerings of the clinic. In each of these spaces, furniture was provided with comfortably curved forms and a gentle color palette, with pieces from MillerKnoll, OFS and JSI.

The design balances performance and cultural connection. Prefabricated solutions support efficiency, flexibility, and smoother patient flow throughout the day, while the project’s LEED Silver target reflects a broader commitment to sustainability.

The space is shaped by three layers of inspiration: Bronzeville’s cultural past, present, and future; Northwestern Medicine’s architectural identity across Chicagoland; and the woven patterns of traditional Ethiopian baskets — a symbol of community strength and unity. Continua Interiors carried these influences into a cohesive design strategy that feels both purposeful and welcoming, reinforcing the clinic’s role as a community-centered place of care.
