Modernizing Civic Space: A Human-Centered Workplace Transformation for Ramsey County’s Attorney’s Office
As part of Ramsey County’s strategic consolidation and modernization initiative, the County Attorney’s Office underwent a transformative renovation spanning seven floors of the Metro Square building in downtown St. Paul. The new space reflects a shift towards more collaborative, functional, and human-centered environments within the public sector.
Working in close partnership with Gensler, the Continua team helped to create a modern, civic-minded workspace that balances functionality with a professional, welcoming aesthetic. A key priority with this project was to create an efficient, comfortable environment that could accommodate 350 workstations across multiple departments, all while streamlining workflows and improving service delivery to the public.
Notable upgrades include thoughtfully designed breakout areas with clean finishes and integrated lighting, an open kitchen and lounge areas that foster natural collaboration, and flexible meeting spaces that offer both privacy and transparency. Power-integrated furniture and layered lighting support productivity across a variety of working styles.
A carefully curated palette of materials and product lines, including solutions from MillerKnoll, VS, Clarus, Keilhauer, OFS, and SOI, ensures consistency and comfort across all levels of the office. Soft neutral tones are paired with durable surfaces and smart technology integration to meet the demands of a high-traffic, high-impact environment.
The revamped Ramsey County Attorney’s Office is now a model for civic workspaces: efficient, adaptable, and designed to support the people who serve the community every day. By reducing the county’s real estate footprint and modernizing their space, Ramsey County has positioned itself for long-term operational success, while giving employees a place they’re proud to work in.
